A priced or unpriced list of all measured work items in a project, with units, quantities and rates. It is the basis of tendering, valuations and final payment.
A table showing every reinforcing bar in a member - diameter, shape, length, bending and quantity. Used for cutting, bending and steel measurement. Related: structural knowledge.
The certificate the Engineer issues for the value of work done in a period, after deductions for advances, retention and prior payments. See contractor billing.
The contractor's periodic (usually monthly) statement of measured work, rates and deductions submitted for certification. Basis: measured quantities × rates.
Extra contract time granted when delays are not the contractor's fault - bad weather, late drawings, variations, or employer-caused suspension. See claims & EOT.
A written instruction changing the scope, quantity, quality or timing of the work, with an agreed price or rate adjustment. Template: variation order.
A percentage (often 5-10%) deducted from each payment and released after defects liability, protecting the employer against uncorrected defects.
The international standard forms of contract published by the FIDIC federation, widely used for government and donor-funded works in Pakistan, often alongside PEC forms.
Pakistan Engineering Council - the statutory regulator that registers engineers and engineering firms in Pakistan. A PEC registration number appears on certified work.
Public Procurement Regulatory Authority - the rules that govern how public-sector contracts are advertised, tendered and awarded in Pakistan.
The site record where measured quantities of executed work are entered for permanent record and used to prepare bills. Template: measurement sheet.
Working out the cost of one unit of work - material, labour, plant, overheads and profit - to fix or verify a rate. Try the BOQ & rate analysis tool.
The maximum soil pressure a foundation can safely support without excessive settlement or shear failure. It decides the foundation type and size.
The working (serviceability) soil pressure used in design - the ultimate bearing capacity divided by a safety factor, or from the soil report.
Permanent weight - self weight of slabs, beams, columns, walls and finishes. It usually dominates a building design. See structural knowledge.
The movable load - people, furniture, vehicles, stored goods. Codes give minimums by occupancy (residential, offices, halls, parking).
The vertical displacement of a member under load. Excessive deflection causes cracking and poor serviceability even when strength is safe. Formula: δ = 5wL⁴/384EI (UDL, simply supported).
A measure of a cross-section's resistance to bending. For a rectangle: I = bh³/12. Bigger I means stiffer member. Try the section properties tool.
Resistance to bending stress at the extreme fibre: S = I / y. Bending stress = M/S. For a rectangle: S = bh²/6.
The effective length of a column divided by its least radius of gyration. High slenderness means buckling governs before material strength.
Concrete takes compression, embedded steel bars take tension. The workhorse of buildings in Pakistan. Steel grade and concrete strength are set by design.
Distance from the outer concrete face to the nearest reinforcement, protecting steel from fire and corrosion. Required minimums are set by codes.
A beam at plinth level tying columns together, supporting walls and distributing loads to foundations while reducing differential settlement.
A vertical concrete wall that resists lateral (earthquake and wind) forces. Essential for mid- and high-rise seismic design in Pakistan.
Cutting and filling of soil to shape the ground. Volume is computed between cross-sections (average end area method: V = L × (A1 + A2)/2).
Mechanical densification of soil to increase strength and reduce settlement. Measured by field density tests against a standard (Proctor) density.
The prepared natural soil on which a road or pavement is built. Its strength largely controls pavement thickness.
The layered structure carrying traffic - subbase, base course and wearing surface (flexible/bituminous or rigid/concrete).
A small structure that lets water pass under a road - pipe, box or slab type. Often a hidden source of under-design if hydrology is skipped.
A structure holding back earth or water at different levels, resisting lateral soil pressure by its weight (gravity), friction (cantilever) or reinforcement (RCC).
Wet volume is the placed concrete volume; dry volume (×1.54) accounts for voids and shrinkage when batching materials. See concrete mix tool.
Water-cement ratio - the single biggest control on concrete strength and durability. Lower ratio = stronger, less workable concrete.
The laboratory test establishing the maximum dry density and optimum moisture content for compacting a given soil.
Testing that does not damage the member - rebound hammer, ultrasonic pulse, cover meter - used in building fitness certification.
Drawings updated to show what was actually constructed, including every field change. Required for handover and future maintenance.

Standard land unit in Pakistan: 1 marla = 272.25 sq ft = 25.29 m². A kanal = 20 marla. Convert with the unit converter.
20 marla = 5,445 sq ft = 505.86 m². Used for plots and land in Punjab and beyond.
Unit of volume (1 cft = 0.0283 m³) still widely used for sand, aggregate and brickwork quantities in Pakistan.

Concrete strength units: 1 MPa = 145 psi; 1 ksi = 6.895 MPa. C-20 concrete ≈ 20 MPa ≈ 2,900 psi.
Kilonewton-metre - the moment (torque) unit used in structural design in Pakistan (SI). 1 kN·m = 0.7376 kip·ft.
C = characteristic strength in MPa (e.g. C-25). M = mix proportion (e.g. M15 = 1:2:4). Both are used; never confuse them.
Weight per metre of a bar in kg: d² / 162 (d in mm). 12 mm bar ≈ 0.888 kg/m. Try the rebar weight tool.

A steel bolt embedded in concrete that fixes a column base plate or machine foundation. Size, embedment and edge distance come from the base plate design.
A load acting along the longitudinal axis of a member - compression in columns, tension in hangers. Columns are checked for axial load plus moment (P-M interaction).
The bituminous wearing course on a road. Thickness and mix are designed from traffic loading; 25-50 mm is common for the surface course on secondary roads.
The internal moment that causes a member to bend. It drives flexural steel in beams and slabs; units are kN·m. Related: structural knowledge.
The internal force acting transverse to a member's axis, causing it to slide or crack diagonally. Beams and slabs need shear checks in addition to bending.
The longest chain of dependent activities in a programme - it sets the project duration. Delays on the critical path extend the completion date; EOT claims depend on it.
Keeping fresh concrete moist so it gains its design strength. In Pakistan's heat, curing starts immediately after finishing and continues 7-14 days; skipping it causes shrinkage cracks.
A contract price adjustment for changes in material, labour or fuel costs during the works. Calculated with an agreed formula; not automatic - it needs a contract clause. Related: how to calculate escalation.
The final statement of account issued at practical completion, covering all certified work, variations, retention release and adjustments. It closes out the contract. Related: IPC vs final bill.
The temporary mould (timber or steel) that shapes fresh concrete until it hardens. Formwork cost and reuse are major items in BOQ estimation.
A pre-agreed daily sum the contractor pays for late completion, written into the contract. If the delay is the employer's fault, the contractor can claim EOT to escape them.
A formal written query from a contractor to the engineer asking for clarification, approval or missing information. RFIs are dated and recorded - they support delay and variation claims.
A daily factual record of site events - weather, labour, plant, instructions, delays and visitors. It is contemporaneous evidence in claims and disputes. Related: daily report template.
A payment certificate or running bill issued by a main contractor to a subcontractor for measured work done. Measurement and withholding rules mirror the main contract.
Comparing billed quantities against the BOQ to identify over- or under-measurement, omissions and rate mismatches before payment. Core to contractor billing.
