Earthwork

Ground first, everything else second

Almost every failure on a building or a road starts in the ground. Compaction and drainage decide whether the work above stays put.

Excavation & filling

Cut to the right level, fill in controlled layers, and remove unsuitable material. The saved topsoil is kept for landscaping; soft pockets are dug out and replaced.

Compaction

Fill is compacted in layers at the right moisture content, each tested for density before the next goes on. Field density tests are the proof, not the roller's word.

Ground improvement

Weak or waterlogged ground gets treated before it costs you later - stone columns, sand replacement, surcharge or a properly designed raft. See the structural knowledge base for foundations.

Borrow & spoil

Quantities for cut, fill and borrow are measured from the drawings and surveys, with haulage costed into the rate. It is the first and largest quantity on most civil jobs. See quantity surveying.

Soil & material tests

Proctor tests fix the target density, field density tests check the work, and sieve tests vet aggregates. Testing is cheap; rework is not.

Setting out

Levels and alignments transferred from plan to ground with total stations and levels. A small setting-out error compounds into big cost later.

Roads

Pavements that earn their life

Roads in Pakistan take heavy loads, heat and one hard monsoon a year. Layer design, drainage and compaction decide the difference between 20 years and 5.

Flexible pavements

Compact subgrade, then subbase, then granular base, then asphalt wearing course. Each layer spreads the load to the layer below - a chain as strong as its weakest layer.

Rigid pavements

Concrete slabs with contraction and expansion joints, suited to heavy and stationary traffic like bus stations and weigh stations. Higher first cost, long life, low maintenance.

Road drainage

Crossfall sheds water to the side drains; culverts carry streams across; sub-surface drains lower the water table under the pavement. Water kept out means a road kept whole.

Dualization works

Pavement failure

Potholes, rutting, alligator cracking and edge breaks are almost always water, weak subgrade or an overloaded axle - not old age. Diagnosis comes before any patch.

Earthworks quantity

Road earthworks are measured by cross-section: cut and fill volumes computed station by station and priced in the BOQ. Accurate takeoff protects contractor and client. See BOQ & estimation.

Concrete & masonry

Durable concrete, honest masonry

The buildings and structures we design, estimate and certify stand on concrete and brickwork done properly.

Mix grades & design

Concrete is specified by grade - 1:2:4 mixes, and design mixes like 3000 psi and 4000 psi. Water-cement ratio controls strength more than cement does; more water makes weaker concrete.

Curing & joints

Curing keeps concrete wet while it gains strength - at least seven days for most structural work. Joints let concrete move without cracking. Both are free; neither is optional.

Masonry & plaster

Brickwork with full mortar joints, plaster with the right mix and suction control. Masonry is also load-bearing in most of our homes, so verticality and bonding matter.

Defects & cracks

Hairline shrinkage cracks, damp walls, spalling concrete and tilting walls each have a cause and a fix. Assessment comes first - see building fitness certification.

Quality control

Cubes for strength, slump for workability, cover for reinforcement, levels for finishes. The QC routine that catches concrete problems is the one in the construction guide.

Quantities & rates

Concrete and masonry are measured by the cubic and square meter, with rates built from materials, labour and plant. Accurate measurement is the basis of billing and claims. See contractor billing & IPC.

Water & drainage

Water under control

Pakistan's rainfall is seasonal and heavy. Controlled water is a service; uncontrolled water is a repair bill.

Storm drainage

Roofs and plots shed rainwater fast in a monsoon. Gutters, RCC drains and outfalls sized for the design storm keep water away from walls and foundations.

Sewerage & septic

Building sewer connections, septic tanks and soakaways designed for local soil and water table, with proper falls and venting. Health depends on it.

Water supply

Pipe sizing, pressures, tanks and pumping for houses, buildings and schemes - with the head and friction losses that most informal designs ignore.

Drainage for roads

Side drains, culverts and crossfalls sized for catchment run-off. The difference between a road that survives monsoons and one that does not is measured here.

Damp & rising water

Damp proof courses, tanking and grading keep floors and basements dry. Waterproofing done at construction is cheap; fixing damp later is expensive.

What is the difference between civil and structural engineering?

Civil engineering covers the wider works - earthwork, roads, drainage, water, sewerage and site development. Structural engineering is the narrower discipline of designing the load-carrying frame - foundations, columns, beams and slabs. The two overlap heavily on every project.

What are the main layers of a road pavement in Pakistan?

A flexible pavement is built in layers: compacted subgrade, subbase, granular base, and an asphalt wearing course on top. Each layer spreads the load to the one below. Rigid pavements use a concrete slab instead of asphalt and are suited to heavy traffic.

Why does drainage matter so much in road construction?

Water is the main enemy of a road. If it enters the pavement layers, the subgrade softens, the layers fail and potholes appear - often within one monsoon. Good crossfalls, side drains, culverts and sub-surface drainage protect the pavement and give the road its design life.

What causes cracks in concrete, and can they be avoided?

Most cracks come from too much water in the mix, poor curing, or joints that were not provided. Shrinkage cracks appear when concrete dries too fast; structural cracks come from overload or movement. Good mix control, proper curing and correctly placed joints avoid most of them.
