Case Study: Gujranwala Expressway

How a 15.2 km grade-separated expressway was engineered - the problem, the method, the technical result and what we learned.

Engineering problem

The problem

Gujranwala's main traffic corridors were at-grade routes that stopped for every junction. As the city grew, journey times through the urban and peri-urban stretches became slow and unpredictable, and the at-grade intersections carried more conflict points than the road network could manage safely.

The task was a grade-separated expressway - 15.2 km with interchanges, structures and approach works - where traffic moves through rather than stopping at each crossing, plus the technical sanction estimates and approval drawings that make an infrastructure package real.

How we approached it

Traffic and origin-destination studies

Surveys to understand where traffic comes from and where it wants to go - the basis for every interchange location and ramp design.

Alignment and interchanges

Expressway alignment with grade-separated interchanges and structures - ramps and cross-over geometry designed for continuous flow.

Structures

Bridges, underpasses and retaining structures at the separation points, designed to carry the loading and the approach works.

Technical sanction estimates

Itemized estimates built from measured quantities, prepared to the standard a technical sanction submission requires.

Approval drawings

Drawings prepared and organized for approval - plan, profile, cross-sections, structures and standard details.

Land and delivery planning

Land acquisition support and construction planning that sequenced structures, ramps and mainline works on a busy urban fringe.

Technical outcome

What was delivered

A 15.2 km grade-separated expressway package with interchanges, structures and approach works, delivered with technical sanction estimates and approval drawings. Where an at-grade road stops traffic, the expressway carries it through, and the project package stands on a complete set of quantities, estimates and drawings.

Lessons learned

What this project taught us

Interchanges are decided by the study, not the sketch

Origin-destination data decides which movements matter. Without it, interchanges get placed for convenience rather than for the traffic that actually uses them.

Structures set the programme

On a grade-separated road the bridges and underpasses are the long-lead items. Sequence them early and the mainline follows.

Sanction estimates protect the package

Infrastructure projects live or die on their estimates. Measured quantities and honest rates are what keep a package fundable and dispute-free.

Urban fringe means land is the real constraint

Land acquisition, not design, is often the pacing item on expressways. Early acquisition planning saves years.
